Former convent of the Augustinians

Built between 1767 and 1780 to a design by the architect Gimignani from Corinaldo, it is now used as a hotel. Passing the large door, surmounted by the monogram in wrought iron M.A. (Augustinian Monastery), which still retains the name of “Friars’ door”, you reach a courtyard with harmonious Vanvitellian shapes. The building, divided into several levels, is a remarkable example of eighteenth-century architecture.
On the south side you can see the apse of the thirteenth-century church of San Nicola, incorporated in the eighteenth-century building that now houses the Civic Art Collection “Claudio Ridolfi”. From the main room there is access to a long cave that descends into the bowels of the historic center through tunnels and niches carved in clay. It was definitely a cave where food was stored at a constant temperature.
