The route begins at Palazzo Mastai, in the heart of Senigallia, where there is the Pius IX Museum dedicated to Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti ( 1792- 1878) who became Pope with the name of Pius IX and was beatified on 3 September 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
The museum is located in the Palazzo Mastai Ferretti, an ancient building dating from the late fifteenth century, inhabited by Mastai since 1557, which is part of the typology of the “House Museum”, opened to the public on 13 May 1892 on the initiative of Cristina Mastai Ferretti, on the occasion of the first centenary of the pontiff.
It is articulated in the environments where the pontiff was born and where he used to return for his Senigallic stays.
It collects portraits, paintings, furniture, prints, medals, coins, volumes, autograph letters, various objects, all related to the activity and life of the pope. Of the original six rooms that made up the apartment, only the Anastasi Hall and the Chapel have retained their original function, while the other rooms have undergone structural changes that have determined, over time, new exhibition routes.
Of particular interest is the Salone di Rappresentanza with a series of room paintings by the Senigalliese painter Giovanni Anastasi (1653-1704).
The itinerary continues in the nearby Piazza Garibaldi, also known as Piazza del Duomo, which evokes the period of the greatest splendour of the Senigallia Fair, placing itself at the centre of the urban expansion work commissioned by Pope Lamberti in the mid-eighteenth century.
The square draws an urban scenery of rare beauty by welcoming buildings of great value. In addition to the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo, the Bishop’s Palace with the Diocesan Art Gallery, the Pio College, and the Minciarelli Palace ( ex Filanda) should be mentioned designed by the architect Ghinelli who at the beginning of the nineteenth century housed in his courtyard a condominium theater in wood
The Cathedral, inaugurated in 1790, is linked to the figure of Pius IX because it was the Pontiff of Senio, who in 1792 was baptized in the Cathedral, to order and finance the new facade of the Cathedral inaugurated on 13 May 1877. Of neoclassical style according to the prevailing taste in the epoch the facade of the Cathedral is to two orders: doric the inferior part, ionic the superior one.
