Not far from Serra de’ Conti, on the border with the territory of Arcevia, there is an important example of industrial archaeology: the Hoffmann Furnace – a brick furnace of the Hoffmann type (sec. XIX). Built in an area rich in excellent clay and water, thanks to the proximity of the river Misa, it remained in operation from 1884 to 1971.
...Privately owned, it has recently been affected by an important restoration.
In 1884, along with the furnace, a building was built that would serve as a dwelling for those who would cultivate the land in front of the furnace. The simultaneous execution of the two constructions is evidenced by the same use of the brick columns that support the large conical roof in the furnace and in the building are supported on the external walls.
In 1973, the new and large longitudinal furnace was installed to replace the old furnace, built with steel beams at its monumental progenitor.
A new restoration has affected the entire complex in the late 90s when the whole structure was purchased by a local entrepreneur to obtain offices and exhibition spaces. Currently part of the old furnace houses a restaurant.
