The castle of Nidastore – “nest of the goshawks”, or hawks that were used for hunting in the Middle Ages – is the northernmost castle of Arcevia, on the borders with the province of Pesaro.
Nidastore was built in the middle of the twelfth century and was always contested between the Bishop of Fossombrone and Rocca Contrada. In 1408 the castle was granted to the nephew of Bishop Raniero di Taddeo dei Ranieri di Pesaro, who was killed by exiles from Rocca Contrada. This story is linked to the tradition according to which Ranieri was killed by the inhabitants of Nidastore themselves following his claim to exercise jus primae noctis on their brides.
In 1462 the castle was definitively recognized to Rocca Contrada by Pius II.
The current town dates back to the second half of the ‘400, when Rocca Contrada, after various destruction, has the obligation to rebuild the castle: note the well-preserved walls on which stand directly the houses and some buildings with portals sixteenth and seventeenth century in excellent condition.
