The majolica pieces of the Civic Museum in Ostra Vetere depicting the Nativity and the Lamentation are a rare and precious example of late 15th-century “majolica plastic”.
...The ceramics are part of a corpus of works made between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, which can be attributed to the atelier of an anonymous artist who worked in Romagna and Marche regions, along the Adriatic route between Faenza and Ancona. Most of these fascinating ceramics are preserved in the most prestigious museums of the world. The ceramic historiography has confirmed the rarity of this plastic majolica genre, classifying it as an isolated and singular expression of masters who were directly influenced by “Flemish” styles and by refined and cultured courts, such as those of Ferrara and Urbino.
