It is now the unmistakable symbol of the city. It was built in the XV century, and stood next to the church of San Giovanni. When, in 1944, a bomb completely gutted the church and, later, it was decided to demolish the facade, the old tower was considered inadequate and, in 1950, it was “encased” in a new tower, higher and more suitable to dominate the main square. Inside, the ancient bell tower is preserved, with the original mechanisms of the clock. On special occasions it is possible to climb up and reach the bell tower.
...It was built in the first half of the 16th century, and is currently 33 meters high. Originally it was lower and narrower, it was renovated and reinforced in 1950 after a bombing that destroyed the nearby church of San Giovanni, an inspection which showed the absence of foundations. During this work the tower was reinforced by widening the base and raised from its original height. Currently the tower presents ghibelline blackbirds. Built in the first half of the XVI sec. it was rebuilt after the Second World War. In 1943, a bomb hit the church of Saint-Jean, destroying it. The tower next to it was also hit by the attack. The old watchtower was incorporated into the new one, the base was enlarged and rose up to 33 meters. The old clock mechanisms and bell dating from the seventeenth century are preserved inside.
