La scalinata di Corinaldo

Via la Piaggia

The staircase of Corinaldo is one of the most famous of the Marche, the majestic Piaggia di Corinaldo, which with the upper Via Le Cento Scale is the cornerstone of the urban structure from which the suggestive alleys branch fish-bones.

...

Flanked for all its development by the characteristic brick houses, climbing its steps allows you to enter the medieval atmosphere of Corinaldo. The effort to climb the 109 steps is rewarded by the suggestions that are revealed at every step. Halfway along the route is the Pozzo della Polenta, linked to one of the most bizarre stories of the place. Continuing, the view rises to the top of the staircase, where stands the bulk of the former Augustinian Convent, in the historic center of Corinaldo. In ancient times the “piagge” were the streets and the sloping paths that connected the different levels on which the country was organized. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, where now there is the staircase, there was an uphill road covered by a pavement; almost an inclined square crossed by people and wagons that went up to the center. The Staircase and the Well give rise to an original urban space that, when you walk, combines history, architecture and traditions. Those who go up the Piaggia can almost hear the echo of the sounds that marked the everyday life of a medieval village.
