The Church of San Mauro Abate was built in the eighteenth century, but it is in 1920 that Don Ottaviani at his expense makes it expand, includes the sacristy and has for the construction of the two side naves, these work that following the death of the then pastor remain incomplete until the second post-war.
...The owner of the parish church of Castel Colonna, St. Mauro Abate (15 January) belongs to the great Benedictine family. As for the origin of the parish of Castel Colonna it is possible to assume the thirteenth century. Initially the church was dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, and it is probably the Benedictine monks who founded the religious community. In the fifteenth century the church is recognized the Priory, but only from the seventeenth century there is news of the succession of priests. The current church became the parish seat in the mid-nineteenth century, while the previous building outside the walls is in ruins. The building is located inside the village, near the main square. It is interesting for its internal structure, with three naves, which is quite rare for a small building like the one we are talking about. The wooden Crucifix that we see, along the left aisle, probably made between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, is the obvious example of the religious sentiment of the community. The amenities of the small church is enriched by the presence of some works, including the painting of the Madonna della Misericordia by Gaetano Lapis from Cagliari and a canvas depicting the Madonna holding the Child, both portrayed with a bright and serene face. The work is preserved in a side chapel with marble walls, carved along the left aisle, and is embellished by a gilded frame radiating. The statue of the Madonna, probably dating back to the 18th century, placed on the right aisle before the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, also proves the solid Marian veneration witnessed in the parish. The presbytery is simple and the only decoration of the apse is the symbol of the Lamb. On the other side of the church, above the main entrance, is the choir.
