Church of San Rocco

The first building dates back to 1527, but towards the end of the 18th century the Church of San Rocco was completely renovated. It houses paintings by Giovanni Brandi da Poli, the workshop of Pietro da Cortona and probably the workshop of Federico Barocci, an organ of 1771 by the famous organist Gaetano Callido from Padova.

...

Construction started in 1527, when the proposal was made to build a church dedicated to the Holy thaumaturge. Already from the entrance to the one nave, the eye of the visitor is struck by the richness of the decorations. The style, Baroque – following the Renaissance -, generates architectural forms between the two currents: columns, pillars, cornices, entablature, moldings elements “borrowed” from classical ruins. The pomp and ostentation of white and golden stucco and other forms of decoration, had the conscious purpose to evoke a vision of heavenly glory. Architects, sculptors painters and craftsmen were called to realize in this church an “art exhibition” capable of overwhelming with splendor and to attract and persuade not only the illiterate and educate him with the words of God, but also the skeptic, who this time had “read too much”. Towards the end of the 18th century, the church was completely renovated and underwent a kind of “rotation”. The entrance was transformed into an apse and moved to the right before the move of the high altar. There are also paintings by Giovanni Brandi da Poli, of the workshop of Pietro da Cortona and, probably, of the workshop of Federico Barocci. All the paintings, except that of the high altar, are marked by the seal of ceralacca, with which were identified the prestigious works, Intended to follow the Napoleonic troops in France. On the wall opposite the high altar is the chancel with cabinet where inside there is an organ of 1771 of the famous organist Gaetano Callido. The ancient monastery is still today possible to visit the refectory, that keeps the boards and the walnut wood cladding intact.
