The “Barbarian” Roots: A History of the Frontier While Ostra Vetere boasts Roman origins, Barbara is proud of her Lombard history. It was born as a military settlement near the Roman city of Suasa (today an archaeological park in the neighboring municipality of Castelleone di Suasa).

• The Name: It derives precisely from the fact that the “barbarians” settled here compared to the Romans of the valley. This identity of “proud people” can still be felt in the pride with which the inhabitants care for their country.
• Sacred Art: Worth seeing is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses interesting works (including a canvas attributed to Pomarancio). Despite the small size of the town, the care for places of worship testifies to a solid community.

• The Tradition: The town is famous throughout the region for its Living Nativity Scene. It’s not a simple act: the entire historic center is emptied of cars, cellars open, and hundreds of extras recreate ancient crafts.
• The Atmosphere: Thanks to the closed structure of the castle, the scenic effect is incredible. It really feels like going back two thousand years. It is one of the most evocative events in the Marche region during the Christmas period.

Gastronomy: Verdicchio Land and Traditions We are in the heart of the production area of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico.

• The Landscape: Looking around, you will see hills combed with vineyards. Wine here is not just a drink, it is the driving economy.
• What to eat: The cuisine is the poor and tasty one of the hinterland. Look in local restaurants for crescia (similar to piadina but richer), local cured meats and dishes based on farmyard animals (rabbit and goose). As an agricultural area, the quality of raw materials is often very high even in the simplest trattorias.

• How long does it take: Barbara is small. In an hour (or an hour and a half taking it easy) you will have seen the whole center and taken a walk along the walls.
• Strategic Location: It is the ideal “buffer” stop. Perfect to include in an itinerary that includes a visit to the Suasa Archaeological Park (10 minutes away) or the village of Arcevia.
• The Expert’s Tip: If you love landscape photography, the roads leading to Barbara offer stunning scenic curves, especially in spring when the wheat fields are bright green, or in summer when they turn golden and fill with sunflowers.
